Summer Randomness

Lots to share - so let's just dive right in!

Summer Party Invite

Over a year ago, the community media center I volunteer with, FC Public Media, was asked to move out of our home studios while the building was remodeled. I’m happy to report that the remodel is complete and we’re moving back in soon! The city is hosting an Open House to celebrate the new space, the Center for Creativity (CC), on Saturday, July 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. And you’re all invited! They’ll have lots of family friendly activities and refreshments will be served. I’ll be in the FCPM studio - come find me!

Summer Daze Trip

A few weeks ago, Mark and I trekked to Bellvue, CO (about half an hour northwest of us) to see  the mysterious metallic monolith that showed up unannounced on a hilltop. The property owners claimed they had no knowledge of the monolith until customers at the nearby Howling Cow Cafe, which they also own, pointed it out to them. A brief recap if you’re not familiar: structures similar to this one are appearing around the globe, 246 at last count. Some in the press, certainly not our team at Snapshot News, speculate that aliens are installing the monoliths. While we were there, the property owners came along with a crew from Channel 7 News. They opened the gate and let the crew in. The owner looked at us, didn’t say a word, and re-locked the gate without inviting us in. My podcast partner, Adam, said a friend of his paid someone $20 to walk up to the monolith. The property owners removed the monolith a couple of weeks ago, claiming too many people were blocking the road. If they re-install it, I suggest, that for $20, they offer valet parking and a golf cart ride to the top.

Summer Birds Return

Probably within minutes of publishing last month’s blog about the Cooper's hawks scaring away all of our backyard songbirds, the little cuties returned en masse. I’m overjoyed that the birds returned. They’re absolutely fascinating to watch. They bring much needed positive energy and sweet music into our space.

Summer Screens

After the disappointment that was season 3 of The Bear, I was glad to find Sunny on Apple TV+. The amazing Rashida Jones stars. The whole series hasn’t dropped yet, but from the three episodes I’ve seen, it’s a winner. The twisty, futuristic plot is tangy with intrigue, pathos, and creepiness. A dry, dark humor edges in every chance it gets.

Summer Lit

I’m reading The Making of Biblical Womanhood, by Dr. Beth Allison Barr. Barr is a professor of medieval history and an associate dean of students at Baylor University. The book is well written in an approachable, very readable style. With her deep-diving research and impeccable Bible translation and interpretation, Barr shows that Jesus and the Apostle Paul were a lot more radical than what churches today preach, especially when it comes to the roles for women. Another for the “Every Christian Should Read This Book” list.

More Summer Reads

Don’t forget that my book, God, I’m a Jerk, is available for free on Kindle Vella. Thanks to all who’ve read the essays and taken the time to comment or send me an email. I appreciate that very much. I’m still hard at work on my next book, and am considering going the traditional publishing route with this one. I’ll let you know soon which route the book takes.

Thanks for sitting with me for a bit!  If you'd like your own little green apple, let me know.

See you at the CC Open House on July 27!
